5 Organizations Fighting to Legalize Cannabis That You Should Support

Legalize Cannabis

In 2012, Colorado became the first state to vote for the legalization of recreational cannabis; a trend that has now spread throughout the entire country. Marijuana is now legal in some form in 31 states, with nine states and D.C. working towards the legalization of recreational use. Each year, more states consider legalization, passing laws that allow for recreational and/or medical use of cannabis. One of the reasons for these wins is the work of different organizations that educate the public and work with elected officials. Consider supporting one or more of the following groups to encourage the legalization of cannabis in the remaining states throughout the nation.

NORML: National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws

The mission of NORML is to advocate for high-quality cannabis by focusing their efforts on educating the public on the benefits of marijuana legalization. NORML believes in responsible use as well as making marijuana affordable, convenient, and safe. Some of the areas they focus on include:

  • Tax benefits of legalization
  • Public advertising
  • Marijuana policy and research
  • Legal assistance for victims of current laws
  • Elimination of criminal and civil penalties
  • Medical, personal and industrial use of cannabis

You can support NORML through tax-deductible gifts, purchasing from their store, becoming a member, or joining the legal community.

MPP is the largest group whose singular focus is on legalizing marijuana. It has been highly involved with changing laws in the majority of states that have legalized cannabis, and it continues to lobby for other states. Along with working to end the prohibition of marijuana in all states, MPP also has a foundation focused on education. The missions of MPP are to:

  • Educate in a realistic and honest way
  • Increase public support for, and identify supporters of, marijuana policies
  • Gain congressional influence
  • Change laws to get rid of penalties related to marijuana use of all kinds

If you would like to support MPP, you can donate to either the legislative or educational efforts. You can also help by spreading the organization's message.

DPA: Drug Policy Alliance

The Drug Policy Alliance strives to implement policies that get rid of marijuana prohibition and reduce drug-use harm.
